SAN Group builds first green hydrogen production facility in Lower Austria
As of 2022, SAN Group will produce up to 100kg of CO2-neutral green hydrogen daily at its site in Herzogenburg, Lower Austria.
SAN Group is investing in a hydrogen facility in the business park in Herzogenburg, Lower Austria, which is operated 100% by renewable energy. A photovoltaic system will be built on the roofs of the company-owned business park for supplying the electrolysis with a performance of 1.5 MW. This equals the annual energy consumption of about 200 households.
“Our system aims at saving, and therefore being able to use, solar energy for 24 hours. The fully integrated energy concept with waste heat utilization and reconversion of the excessive hydrogen will supply the entire SAN Group site in the future,” Martin Blauensteiner, Managing Director of SAN Real and project manager, says enthusiastically.
“The produced hydrogen is partly used for our own fleet, however, it is also available for external partners. At the moment, we are negotiating with companies and communities in our region, whom we want to provide with the opportunity to try green hydrogen as a future energy source, and to deal with this topic,” says Peter Kickinger, Chief Finance Officer SAN Group.
“This project is only the beginning of a series of investments in renewable energies by SAN Group. It focuses on paving the way today for a better tomorrow. This can only be done with courageous investments in innovative concepts. SAN Group will be a pioneer in many fields,” explains Erich Erber, founder and president of SAN Group.
The total investment in the production of hydrogen including the adjacent photovoltaic system is around 3 million euros. The system is scheduled to go into operation in spring 2022. Project partner is the Upper Austrian family-owned company Fronius International GmbH.
